Care Home Funding & Grants: How Care Homes Can Access Funding to Purchase Affordable Transport Solutions

Funding is one of the most significant challenges faced by care homes today. With rising operational costs, many care homes are under financial strain, and securing the necessary resources to maintain high standards of care can be difficult. This is especially true when it comes to additional services like transportation, which, although essential, can often be overlooked in budgets. However, there are various care home funding and grant opportunities specifically designed to support care homes, enabling them to improve their services and, crucially, expand their transport capabilities.

Many care homes depend on external transportation services to ensure residents can attend medical appointments, community outings, or social activities. However, these services can be costly, unreliable, or inflexible, leading to missed opportunities for residents to engage with the world outside the home. Regular outings and the ability to attend medical appointments on time can significantly impact a resident’s mental and physical well-being. Dedicated transport, such as a converted minibus, could dramatically improve a care home’s efficiency and the quality of life for its residents.

The good news is that there are funding options available to help care homes purchase their vehicles. Whether through local authority funding for care homes, national government funding programs, or charitable organizations, care homes can access resources designed to enhance resident services. In many cases, the funds can be used for transportation-related costs, including purchasing converted minibuses for sale, vehicle modifications, and ongoing operational expenses. For example, local councils and healthcare organizations often offer grants aimed at improving mobility and accessibility for elderly and disabled residents. These funds can be used by care homes to invest in transport that ensures their residents are not left isolated or dependent on unreliable external providers.

Purchasing a used minibus for sale through funding initiatives allows care homes to provide safe, comfortable, and consistent transport for their residents, whether for medical needs, social outings, or community engagement. Having a vehicle on hand makes it easier to plan activities that enrich residents’ lives while also reducing the long-term expenses associated with hiring external transport services. By taking advantage of these funding opportunities, care homes can expand their fleet without bearing the full financial burden upfront, ensuring that they can continue to offer excellent care while staying within budget.

In this blog, we’ll explore the different care home funding streams available and how these grants can be used specifically for transportation needs, such as purchasing competitively priced, converted minibuses from AFJ, we aim to show care homes how they can secure their vehicles to improve resident care and quality of life while staying financially viable.

Types of Available Grants and Funding for Care Homes

Care homes play a critical role in providing comprehensive care for elderly and disabled residents, but the financial strain of maintaining and improving their services can be significant. Fortunately, various grants and care home funding options are available to help care homes enhance their offerings, including transportation solutions like converted minibuses or used minibuses for sale. Below, we outline some key sources of funding that care homes can tap into, including local authority grants, national programs, charitable foundations, and private-sector partnerships.

funding for care homes in the uk

1. Local authority-funded care homes

Local councils are among the first places care homes can seek financial support. Many local authorities offer grants or loans to care homes to help improve the quality of care and resident services. Local authority-funded care homes are earmarked for projects that directly impact the well-being of residents, such as enhancing accessibility or upgrading transport services. For example, councils may offer specific grants to help care homes purchase minibuses or vehicles that accommodate residents with mobility issues, ensuring they can attend medical appointments or engage in social activities without relying on external transportation services.

Care homes can apply for funding through their local authority’s health and social care department. It’s important to research which specific local authority funding for care homes is available in your area, as these can vary depending on regional budgets and priorities. Additionally, councils may provide loans at favourable rates for care homes looking to make long-term investments in transport infrastructure.

2. National Funding Programs

At a national level, several government funding for care homes offer grants, particularly those focused on improving accessibility and mobility for elderly residents. One prominent example is the Community Transport Grant, which aims to support transport solutions for communities that may not have easy access to public transportation. Care homes can apply for funding to purchase or lease converted minibuses that provide regular transport for residents to attend community events, medical appointments, or day trips.

Additionally, national healthcare initiatives often have government funding for care homes

that demonstrate a need for improved transport services as part of broader resident care efforts. For example, the Better Care Fund, an NHS funding for care homes program, is designed to integrate health and social care and may provide funding to enhance transport solutions for care home residents with ongoing medical needs.

3. Charitable Grants

Charities and nonprofit organizations can also be valuable sources of funding for care homes looking to expand their transport options. Many charities specifically focus on supporting elderly and disabled individuals by providing grants to improve their quality of life. For instance, charities like The Barchester Foundation or The Joseph Rowntree Foundation often allocate funds to care homes to cover transportation costs, including the purchase or maintenance of accessible converted minibuses. These grants are typically offered to care homes that can demonstrate a clear need for transport improvements, particularly if the current lack of transportation limits residents’ ability to participate in community life.

Other organisations, such as Age UK, also provide support and guidance to care homes on how to apply for funding or access available grants. Charitable foundations are particularly beneficial for smaller care homes that may not have the budget or resources to invest in transportation upgrades independently.

4. Private Sector Partnerships

Care homes can also explore potential funding opportunities through partnerships with private sector organizations. Many businesses, especially those involved in healthcare or community services, offer corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to support local care facilities. These initiatives may funding for care homes,  grants or donations specifically for improving transport options, whether through funding for used minibuses for sale  or subsidies for transportation services.

Partnering with a local business can also lead to long-term sponsorships or collaborations, where companies provide ongoing financial support or discounted services for care homes in exchange for public recognition of their contribution to elderly care. This type of government funding for care homes can be a valuable supplement to government grants and charitable donations, allowing care homes to invest in reliable, customized transport solutions such as AFJ’s competitively priced converted minibuses for sale.

By exploring a variety of grants and funding sources, care homes can secure the financial backing needed to improve their transportation services and ensure their residents receive the best possible care. From local authority funding for care homes to national programs, charitable foundations, and private sector partnerships, there are numerous avenues for care homes to access funding that can be used to purchase or upgrade minibuses. Taking advantage of these opportunities can greatly enhance the quality of life for residents, offering them greater independence and the ability to stay engaged with the world beyond the care home.

How to Apply for Grants and Funding

care home funding

Securing grants and funding for care homes can be a complex process, but with the right approach, it’s possible to unlock the financial resources needed to enhance services, including transportation. Whether you’re seeking support from local council funding for care homes, national programs, or charitable foundations, following a strategic approach will help maximize your chances of success. Below, we break down the key steps for researching, preparing, and applying for grants that care homes can use for projects like purchasing converted or used minibuses for sale.

1. Research and Planning

The first step in applying for grants and funding is conducting thorough research to identify the best options available to your care home. Grants may come from local authorities, national government initiatives, or charitable organizations, each with different eligibility criteria and funding purposes. It’s important to understand where to look for these opportunities and how to align them with your care home’s funding needs.

Local councils often provide grants for community services, including transport, through health and social care budgets. Some care homes have successfully secured grants to improve accessibility or transport services by engaging directly with their local authority or health board. Additionally, national programs like the Better Care Fund or Community Transport Grant offer funds to improve services that directly affect resident well-being, such as transportation for medical appointments or social outings.

In terms of charitable organizations, foundations like The Barchester Foundation and Age UK also provide grant opportunities. Regularly checking their websites, subscribing to newsletters, and networking within the care home industry can help you stay informed about new funding opportunities.

2. Eligibility Criteria

Once you’ve identified potential funding sources, it’s essential to understand the eligibility criteria for each grant. Eligibility often varies depending on the grant provider but typically includes several common requirements for care homes:

  • Non-Profit or Registered Care Status: Many grants are aimed at non-profit care homes or those registered with local authorities and regulatory bodies. For-profit care homes may still qualify for some grants, especially if the project directly benefits residents’ health and well-being.
  • Demonstrable Need: Care homes often need to provide evidence of why they need the grant. For transport-related funding, this might include showing how the lack of reliable transportation negatively affects residents (e.g., missed medical appointments, and reduced participation in community activities).
  • Service Impact: Funders typically want to see that their grant will have a lasting, positive impact on the care home and its residents. For transport projects, this could mean demonstrating how a new or used minibus for sale would provide ongoing benefits, such as regular social outings, medical transport, or improved access for residents with mobility issues.

Some grants also have specific requirements regarding the size of the care home or the demographics of the residents it serves, such as age or disability status. Care homes need to ensure they meet all the specified criteria before applying.

3. Application Process

Once you have identified the appropriate grant and ensured your care home meets the eligibility criteria, it’s time to prepare your application. A well-organized, compelling application can significantly improve your chances of receiving funding.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying for a Grant:

  • Prepare Your Case: Start by outlining why your care home needs the funding and how the grant will be used. For transport-related grants, this could include explaining the impact that reliable, dedicated transport will have on residents’ quality of life. Mention specific benefits such as improved access to medical care, social inclusion, or recreational opportunities.
  • Collect Data: Funders often request data to support your case, such as the number of residents who would benefit, the current cost of external transport services, or how many outings are missed due to transport limitations. You may also want to include projections for cost savings over time if the grant will help reduce ongoing transportation costs.
  • Provide a Budget: Include a clear breakdown of the costs associated with your proposed project. For example, if you’re applying for funding to purchase a minibus, outline the cost of the vehicle, any necessary modifications (such as wheelchair accessibility), and ongoing maintenance. Showing how the grant will be efficiently used is key to a successful application.
  • Highlight the Long-Term Benefits: Grant providers often look for projects that offer lasting value. When applying for transport-related funding, emphasize how the investment will provide ongoing benefits for years to come, from reducing the reliance on third-party providers to enabling more frequent and meaningful outings.
  • Include Supporting Documents: Depending on the grant, you may be required to submit additional documents, such as your care home’s registration details, financial statements, or letters of support from community organizations.
  • Submit On Time: Ensure you meet all deadlines and follow any specific submission guidelines. Late or incomplete applications are often disqualified without review, so careful attention to detail is critical.

By conducting thorough research, ensuring eligibility, and preparing a comprehensive application, care homes can greatly increase their chances of securing valuable grants and funding. Whether through local authority care home funding, national programs for government funding for care homes, NHS funded care homes or charitable organizations, there are numerous opportunities for care homes to access funding for critical projects like purchasing converted minibuses for sale. Investing time in this process can yield long-term benefits for both residents and staff, ultimately improving the quality of care and expanding service capabilities.

5 Keys to Reliable Home-to-School Transport in the UK

Ensuring safe and reliable home to school transport for students is a vital responsibility for local authorities, city councils and schools across the UK. With nearly one thousand schools in the independent sector alone offering transport services, alongside City Councils providing assistance to eligible students (aged 5-19), the logistics and budgets involved in home-to-school transport can be significant.

However, there’s always room for improvement. By implementing efficient and cost-effective strategies, local authorities and schools can optimize their home-to-school transport systems, ensuring students arrive safely and on time while maximizing budgetary resources.

In this blog, we’ll explore five key strategies that can enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of your home-to-school transport operations. We’ll delve into practical tips, explore best practices, and consider emerging technologies that can streamline processes and optimize resource allocation.

Prioritizing Operator Compliance

Every home to school transport operator functions under a unique set of regulations. Regardless of size or service specifics, certain fundamental processes must be consistently monitored and adhered to.

  • Operating License: Vehicles designed to carry nine or more passengers (excluding the driver) for commercial purposes require a Bus Operator’s License issued by the Department for Transport (DfT). This license signifies the operator meets the necessary safety and quality standards.
  • Comprehensive Insurance: Adequate vehicle insurance is mandatory for all vehicles operating on UK roads. Public liability insurance is highly recommended for protecting the operator from claims by the public. Employers’ liability insurance is essential if staff are employed, and additional coverage is necessary if the transport service is profit-making.
  • Procedural Efficiency: Operators should prioritize regularly updating procedures related to security, health and safety, vehicle cleanliness, and child safeguarding. Staff training is crucial to ensure they are aware of current regulations, understand their responsibilities, and can effectively respond to various situations.
  • Financial Stability: The law mandates operators to maintain a healthy financial standing. The DfT will assess financial viability during the initial license application, five-yearly renewals, or if a public inquiry is triggered.
  • Operator Compliance Risk (OCR) Score: The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) assigns an OCR score to each operator license. Points are added to the score when compliance issues or violations are identified. Maintaining a good OCR score demonstrates a commitment to safety regulations [5].

By prioritizing these core aspects of operator compliance, parents can be confident that their children are entrusted to responsible and well-regulated transport providers.

Maintaining a Safe and Reliable Fleet

home to school transport

A research by the Department for Transport (DfT) indicates that the average school run in the UK takes approximately 19 minutes. If a child relies on a home to school transport service, it’s essential that the vehicles used are meticulously maintained. This ensures a smooth, safe journey for all passengers.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Scheduled Maintenance: Reputable operators will have comprehensive maintenance policies and schedules in place for each vehicle. These schedules detail regular servicing intervals to address potential issues before they escalate.
  • Valid MOT Scores: A valid Ministry of Transport (MOT) test certificate is mandatory for all vehicles over three years old operating on UK roads. This rigorous test ensures the vehicle meets roadworthiness standards.
  • Daily Walk-Around Checks: Prior to each journey, drivers should conduct thorough walk-around checks of their assigned vehicle. This visual inspection identifies any potential problems that might compromise safety.

Traffic Commissioner Approval

The Traffic Commissioners for England and Wales are responsible for regulating bus and coach services]. When issuing an operator’s license, they assess the applicant’s commitment to vehicle maintenance. This includes scrutinizing maintenance arrangements and verifying the availability of sufficient funds for ongoing upkeep.

Safety Features and Hygiene Standards

Modern home to school transport vehicles should be equipped with essential safety features. These typically include:

  • CCTV Cameras: Onboard CCTV systems provide an extra layer of security and can be crucial in case of incidents.
  • Three-Point Seat Belts: Invented in 1959, three-point seat belts are a vital safety technology that significantly reduces the risk of injury during an accident.
  • Deep Cleaning: Maintaining a clean and hygienic environment within the vehicle is vital for passenger comfort and health. Operators should have thorough cleaning protocols in place, especially considering the heightened awareness of hygiene post-pandemic.

By prioritizing these aspects of vehicle maintenance compliance, parents can be assured that their children are transported in safe, well-maintained vehicles equipped with the latest safety features.

Investing in Qualified Drivers

Competent and experienced drivers are the backbone of a reliable home-to-school transport service. The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) offers resources and guidance to support this crucial aspect. Here’s what to consider:

  • Enhanced DBS Checks: All home-to-school transport drivers must undergo rigorous background checks through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). This enhanced vetting process provides peace of mind for both parents and schools.
  • Safeguarding, First Aid & Fire Safety Training: Drivers need comprehensive training to equip them with the necessary skills to protect children. This includes safeguarding training to identify and report potential abuse, first aid training to handle emergencies, and fire safety training to ensure evacuation procedures are followed effectively.
  • Specialist Training for Younger Pupils: Drivers transporting very young children require additional, specialized training. This ensures they understand the unique needs and vulnerabilities of this age group.

Beyond Qualifications: Building Trust

Training and certification are essential, but they’re just one piece of the puzzle. For example, West Midlands authorities recognize the critical role drivers play in safeguarding children. Drivers are often in a position to observe situations that others might miss, and their vigilance can be crucial in identifying potential abuse or neglect.

home to school transport Birmingham

By prioritizing thorough training and creating a culture of open communication, councils, schools, and local authorities in the West Midlands can empower drivers to be active participants in child safety. This, in turn, fosters greater trust and confidence among parents who rely on home to school transport services.

Building a Collaborative Approach

Effective home to school transport requires collaboration between councils, schools, and transport providers. The WMCA offers a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and best practice development. By working together, these stakeholders can ensure West Midlands children receive a safe, reliable, and well-supervised journey to and from school every day.

Optimizing Routes for Efficiency and Safety

In the West Midlands, ensuring children arrive at school on time and safely is paramount for local authorities, schools, and councils.

When designing home-to-school transport routes, several key considerations come into play:

  • Safe Pick-up and Drop-off Points: The designated locations for collecting and dropping off children must prioritize safety above all else. This means ensuring clear sightlines, adequate pedestrian space, and minimal disruption to traffic flow.
  • Accessibility Throughout the Day: Pick-up and drop-off points should be readily accessible at designated times and free from obstructions that might occur during other hours of the day. For example, avoiding areas with street cleaning schedules during pick-up times.
  • Convenience for Parents: Consideration should be given to the ease of access for parents collecting children. This includes avoiding congested roads during peak hours and identifying locations with sufficient space to accommodate multiple cars if necessary.
  • Multimodal Accessibility: Ideally, pick-up and drop-off points should be easily accessible to parents regardless of their chosen mode of transport. This might involve providing safe drop-off areas for parents who cycle or walk to collect their children.

Collaboration is Key

Effective route planning requires collaboration between transport operators, schools, and local authorities. By working together, they can identify the most efficient and safest routes that consider the needs of all stakeholders. The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) can provide valuable support and resources in this process.

Optimizing for Efficiency

Route planning should also aim for efficiency. This means minimizing travel times while ensuring all children are collected and dropped off safely. Technology solutions like GPS tracking and route optimization software can be valuable tools in achieving this balance.

By prioritizing these aspects of route navigation and optimization, West Midlands authorities can ensure children travel to and from school safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to parents’ schedules.

Ensuring Compliance with Regulations

In the West Midlands, councils, schools, and local authorities share a responsibility to ensure home to school transport services comply with all relevant regulations. The legal framework for home to school transport in the UK is built on several key pieces of legislation:

  • The Education Act 1996: This act establishes the legal framework for school transport, outlining the responsibilities of local authorities.
  • Statutory Guidance on Home-to-School Services (2014): This guidance, issued by the Department for Transport (DfT), promotes the use of sustainable transport options for home-to-school journeys.
  • Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations (PSVAR) 2000: These regulations set accessibility standards for public service vehicles, including those used for home-to-school transport with a capacity exceeding 22 passengers.

Working Together for Compliance

Meeting these legal requirements necessitates collaboration between all stakeholders. The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) offers resources and guidance to support local authorities, schools, and transport providers in navigating the regulatory landscape.

Benefits of Compliance

Adherence to regulations goes beyond meeting legal obligations. It fosters a safe and inclusive environment for all children utilizing home-to-school transport. This includes:

Understanding NEPTS: A Guide to Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services in the UK

Navigating the healthcare system can be complex, especially when it comes to patient transport in the UK.  For millions of patients, getting to and from medical appointments isn’t as simple as hopping on a bus or calling a taxi. This is where Non-Emergency Patient Transport Services (NEPTS) come in, providing a lifeline for those who are unable to travel independently due to medical conditions or other mobility challenges.

Every year, NEPTS facilitates over 11 million patient journeys across the UK, covering an astounding half a million miles each weekday. Recognizing the vital role NEPTS plays, NHS England conducted a comprehensive review of the service in 2021, aiming to enhance its efficiency and accessibility (NHS England, 2021).

In this guide, we’ll delve into the intricacies of NEPTS, exploring who qualifies, how to access the service, its cost implications, and the ongoing efforts to improve it. We’ll also shed light on the valuable role private providers like AFJ play in supporting NEPTS, ensuring that all patients can reach their medical appointments safely and comfortably. Whether you’re a patient, caregiver, or simply curious about this essential service, this guide will provide a comprehensive understanding of non emergency medical transportation in the UK.

Who Qualifies for Patient Transport in the UK?

It’s important to understand that non emergency medical transportation is not simply a convenient alternative to arranging your own transport. It’s a vital service designed for individuals whose medical conditions or disabilities make independent travel to and from healthcare appointments unsafe or impossible.

The NHS has established specific criteria to determine who qualifies for patient transport in the UK. You’re likely to qualify if you meet one or more of the following:

  • Medical Need: This includes individuals who require oxygen or specialized equipment during transit, need close monitoring, are being transferred between hospitals, or have a medical condition that could compromise their safety or dignity on public transport.
  • Cognitive or Sensory Impairment: This covers individuals with dementia, mental health conditions, learning difficulties, or significant hearing or visual impairments that prevent them from traveling independently.
  • Significant Mobility Need: This includes those who need to travel lying down, require a stretcher, have bariatric needs, are unable to move without assistance, or are wheelchair users.
  • Traveling to/from In-Center Hemodialysis: Patients undergoing this life-saving treatment are automatically eligible for transport assistance, which may include specialist or non-specialist transport or reimbursement for private travel.

In addition to these core criteria, local healthcare systems may consider other factors such as the frequency of treatment, travel distance, transport costs, and the availability of public transport options when determining eligibility.

If you believe you or someone you care for may be eligible for non emergency patient transport, it’s crucial to discuss this with your healthcare provider or GP. They can assess your needs and advise you on the next steps to access this essential service.

Types of Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service Providers

The provision of non emergency patient transport in the UK isn’t limited to a single entity. Instead, a diverse network of providers ensure that patients have access to the transport they need. These providers fall into three main categories:

  1. NHS Trusts: Many NHS trusts operate their own in-house non-emergency patient transport services, employing their own drivers and vehicles. This allows for closer integration with hospital services and potentially smoother coordination of patient journeys.
  2. Private Ambulance Services: Some ambulance services, both private and those under contract with the NHS, like AFJ also offer NEPTS. These patient transport services in the UK. The AFJ staff is experienced in handling patients with complex medical needs, making them a suitable option for certain individuals.  They offer greater flexibility in scheduling and vehicle options, and they can cater to specific needs that NHS trusts or ambulance services might not be able to address.

The responsibility for commissioning non-emergency patient transport services lies with local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) or Integrated Care Boards (ICBs). These organizations assess the needs of their local population and then contract with the most suitable providers to deliver non emergency medical transportation services. This approach ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and that patients receive the most appropriate level of care and support during their journeys.

Cost of NEPTS & Challenges Faced

In most cases, non-emergency patient transport services are provided free of charge to eligible patients. However, there are some exceptions where patients may be asked to contribute towards the cost of their transport. This could be due to factors like exceeding the standard mileage limit for their journey or choosing a private provider that is not fully funded by the NHS.

For patients on low incomes, the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS) may offer financial assistance with travel expenses to and from NHS appointments. If you’re concerned about the cost of your non-emergency patient transport service, you can find out more about the HTCS and check your eligibility on the NHS website.

Despite its vital role, NEPTS face some challenges, including:

  • Inconsistency in Service Provision: The quality and availability of non emergency patient transport can vary depending on the region and the specific provider, leading to disparities in patient experiences.
  • Long Wait Times: Some patients have reported experiencing long wait times for transport, which can be particularly challenging for those with complex medical needs.
  • Communication Issues: Miscommunication or lack of information can sometimes lead to missed appointments or delays in transport.

To address these issues, the NHS England review in 2021 made several recommendations for improving NEPTS, including:

  • Standardizing Eligibility Criteria: Creating national guidelines to ensure consistent eligibility assessments across the country.
  • Improving Booking Systems: Implementing more user-friendly and efficient booking processes to reduce wait times.
  • Enhancing Communication: Ensuring better communication between healthcare providers, non emergency patient transport providers, and patients.
  • Increasing Capacity: Exploring options to increase the capacity of NEPTS to meet growing demand.

BUSINESSES CHANGING LIVES THROUGH CSR

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the moral compass guiding modern businesses. CSR is more than a trend; it’s a commitment to making a positive impact. CSR emphasizes that companies aren’t isolated entities; they’re intertwined with society. Companies embracing CSR understand that success isn’t solely measured by profits but also by the contributions they make to society. Beyond profit-making, these companies prioritize making a positive impact on society and the environment. They believe in doing well by doing good, fostering a culture of responsibility and empathy. For entities like AFJ, CSR serves as a compass, directing their efforts towards meaningful engagement and community betterment.

WHY IS CSR IMPORTANT?

At its core, CSR represents a commitment to ethical practices, social consciousness, and sustainable development. Companies embracing CSR recognize their role as key stakeholders in societal progress. They acknowledge their influence on societal and environmental factors. They make sure to do things ethically. It’s not just about making their brand look good; it’s also about helping communities and the environment. They take responsibility for their actions to leave a positive mark and build trust among everyone involved.

IS CSR AN ADDITIONAL EXPENSE FOR ORGANISATIONS?

CSR isn’t just about giving; it’s also about gaining. As people increasingly value social and environmental efforts, CSR becomes a powerful asset for companies. It’s not an expense—it’s an investment that brings returns. By prioritizing CSR, companies enhance their reputation, attract loyal customers, engage motivated employees, and draw in investors. It’s a strategy that benefits everyone involved and produces a Win- Win scenario for all parties, making it a smart move for all organisations to actively engage in and let all the stakeholders (organisation, society and environment) benefit from CSR initiatives.
